Whaleback Waterproof Insulated Vest: Tame the Wildest Winter

When winter’s at its most wicked, here’s the vest you can trust to weather the storm. Named for the whaleback steamers that once shouldered aside wind, sleet and snow on the Great Lakes, this vest is tough enough for any job without sacrificing the mobility you need. The 4x-stronger nylon shell is windproof, waterproof and breathable with leak-tight sealed seams. Warm to -15°F when you’re working up a storm, thanks to bulk-free Thinsulate™ insulation throughout. Plus a backside-protecting cinchable drop-tail hem. Elasticized armholes to prevent drafty gaps. A passel of pockets. And a removable, adjustable hood to block a headwind. When you work where winter’s as wild as Lake Superior, you need Whaleback.

Features
  • 6-oz. rugged nylon shell is waterproof, windproof, 4x tougher than cotton duck

First vest ever. Absolutely perfect

I bought this vest a year ago, when it was still 169.99. It exceeded my expectations. In Iowa it gets cold, and it keeps me very warm, with a sweatshirt underneath the vest. I also work in cold storage warehouse, and it does amazing in there as well. It's very very comfortable. The hood is extremely warm as well in the ice cream freezer, and it pulls over the head nicely, and covers everything. The hood can be tightened as well. It's nice that it is removable if needed. There is many many pockets, for tons of storage. I saw that this vest was on sale today for 65% off. WOW. I instantly bought two more vests for that deal. It seems like they are being discontinued though, as the black was out of stock in large, and the huge sale discount. That is disappointing. I really hope they make another vest like this. But I will be set to go for several years, now having 3 of them.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Duluth Whaleback Vest – Another Winner in the Line

The Whaleback Vest from Duluth is my third purchase from this line this winter, and just like the pants and parka I previously bought, it has exceeded my expectations. This vest is incredibly warm, keeps your core comfortable, and completely blocks the wind. The hood is the same as the one on my parka, which I love. While the parka and pants are perfect for extreme cold, they would have been too warm for milder winter days and early spring. The vest, however, is the ideal balance—perfect for yard work or standing on the sidelines watching my kids play sports. This gear is made for warmth and function, not for a night out at a nice restaurant. I had my eye on the vest for a bit, and like my previous purchases, I managed to find it on sale. Absolutely worth the money, and I have no doubt it will last for years.

Where is my vest?

I purchased one in my normal size on a black Friday special, it fit like a contractors trash bag, so I sent it back along with another vest that didn't fit. I received a replacement for the other vest two weeks ago, and Duluth has given me no notification of this one. Trying to get someone on the phone is like pulling teeth, there has been no attempt made to tell me where my vest or my money is, so I guess I can just light a match to what I spent. Absolutely atrocious experience.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Another plus for Duluth

Room vest, room to layer and be over bundled. Slash pockets for your hands with fleece inside. Lots of pockets for your gear, hood is big and could use some type of method for adjustment, but still OK.
